My son, Derek Watt, a Matt fan since his 2000 Rookie of the Year performance, took me to the 2004 NEXTEL All Star Challenge.
We arrived at the track and as we entered the stadium Derek asked me who I wanted to win the race. I replied, “I don’t know. I don’t know any of the drivers.”
He said, “Well, Kasey Kahne is a rookie; he won’t have many fans, so why not cheer for him?” To this suggestion I asked, “Who is your driver?”
“Matt Kenseth, No. 17,” he said, to which I replied, “Then that’s who I am for.”
Of course, Matt was the race winner. My fandom began.
As the late Paul Harvey would say, “And now for the rest of the story.”
We are a Matt Kenseth racing family. Not only do my son and I fervently support Matt, but my wife, Katherine, is a strong supporter. In addition, my grandboy, Chrystopher, Derek’s son, is a committed-for-life fan. He is even a proud member of the Matt Kenseth Fan Club.
Go No. 20 in 2015!
Willis M. “Bill” Watt
