MK Memories: Mike the Cake Man
Back to news list--------------------------------------------
From Mike, the Cake Man:
I remember Kelley (Busse, Matt's sister) asked me to decorate a cake at the fan club party in 2002. I had brought a DEWALT car cake in 2000 for the family to celebrate Matt’s Rookie of the Year Award and was able to meet Matt for the first time.
The next year I brought in a finished cake and started raffling them off for charity. In 2002 is when Kelley asked me if I would do one at the party. I thought it was a weird request but I decided to do it. The more I thought about it, I thought it might be kind of cool.
So, the first year I set up my table and when the people started wandering in they saw me decorating this cake. I didn’t know what to expect. I never performed in front of people before so wondered if I would be OK doing this?
As it went along, people came up and were chatting with me about how cool it was that I was doing this, and we were raising money for charity. Kids would come up and have their picture taken with the cake. Some got frosting samples squirted on their fingers and it turned out to be one of the best experiences ever.
I can’t count how much was raised for charity over the years due to the generous hearts of Matt Kenseth fans, but every year that I decorate the car cake it is a phenomenal experience for me personally.
Thanks to all the Kenseth family and friends for all the support over the years!
