Matt Kenseth on racing at Dover:
“Dover is probably my favorite track for a lot of different
reasons: my first Cup race was there, we’ve won a couple times
there in the Nationwide Series, and we got our first Cup win
there last year, so we’ve had a lot of good times at Dover. The
track is so fast and challenging. It’s unique because of the way
you drive up out of the turns. The turns set a bit lower than
the straightaways and you can feel it when you’re driving out
there.
“It seems every time we go to Dover it’s either all or
nothing. We either run really well and finish well, or something
crazy happens and we don’t end up with a good finish. We had a
really good car there in September and could have won the race
if it weren’t for mechanical troubles. I’m hoping we don’t have
those issues this time and contend for a win. Dover is a good
place for us. There have been times we’ve had problems there but
it usually isn’t with the car. Hopefully, we’re able to compete
a little bit better this weekend and make up some ground.”
Crew Chief Chip Bolin on
racing at Dover:
“Team 17 has had some success at Dover in the
past, but we’ve also had our share of heartache as well. The
last time we raced there we led almost half of the race and
looked to be on our way to victory lane and our engine expired.
So I guess you could say this time we’re looking for a little
redemption there. We are bringing a good car that Matt has been
fairly consistent in this year, so hopefully we’ll get the setup
right and be able to go out there and compete for the win.”

Last
week’s third-place finish in the Sprint All-Star Challenge was the
morale booster that Matt Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT/R+L Carriers
Ford Fusion team needed as they headed into Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600,
the most grueling race on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.
Kenseth qualified 12th for Sunday’s 400-lap event and spent the
majority of it inside the top 15. Despite the impressive showing,
handling issues plagued team 17 for much of the race and prevented
Kenseth from charging to the front. When the checkers finally flew
after four hours and 25 minutes of racing, Kenseth crossed the
finish line in seventh place.
Under warm, sunny skies, Kyle Busch led the 43-car field to green
in front of a crowd of nearly 160,000 at the 1.5-mile oval located
in Concord, N.C. Kenseth followed in 12th position in the green and
yellow R+L Carriers paint scheme and settled in for the longest,
most challenging race of the season. One of the greatest challenges
of the event is battling the ever-changing racetrack. Since the race
starts with the sun still out and gradually transitions to darkness,
teams that manage the shifting conditions will usually prevail.
Kenseth reported the car being too loose at the start the race as
he ran in and around 12th place. Pitting for the first time on lap
49, under green flag conditions, the Killer Bees executed a
four-tires-and-fuel pit stop with a minor air pressure adjustment
and Kenseth rejoined the race in eighth place. Despite the
adjustments, Kenseth continued to report ill-handling conditions,
yet maintained a top-10 running position.
Throughout the marathon event, Kenseth was penalized once for
speeding on pit road after a stop on lap 192. Despite the setback,
the No.17 crew would work to tweak the DEWALT/R+L Carriers Ford
Fusion with track bar and wedge adjustments over the course of nine
scheduled pit stops. While Kenseth never reported being completely
satisfied with the handling of the No. 17, significant air pressure
changes and the removal of a spring rubber during a stop on lap 329
helped Kenseth to begin picking off the competition lap-by-lap.
On lap 334 Kenseth was scored in 17th place, and by lap 359 he
had worked his way up to seventh position. Although things looked
promising for team 17, fuel mileage would play a role in the race’s
conclusion. As most cars pitted on lap 335 under caution — just 10
laps short of Kenseth’s fuel window — another fuel-only stop would
be required to complete the race. One-by-one cars pitted for fuel,
and Kenseth joined them on lap 390. A three-count of fuel was all
that was needed and Kenseth returned to the track to complete the
race. In the final 10 laps, Kenseth did what he could, but
ultimately finished seventh.
Kasey Kahne won the Coca-Cola 600, his eighth NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series victory. Roush Fenway Racing driver Greg Biffle finished
second. Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. followed to
complete the top five.
The solid finish for Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT/R+L Carriers
team gave them a great points advantage, boosting them from 20th to
16th in overall point standings.
“We just really fell behind some today and could never really get
our set up just right,” said Kenseth. “Even though we were able to
get a pretty decent finish, it could have been a lot better. Still
we were able to make some gains in the point standings and hopefully
that will continue next week at Dover.”
Kenseth and the No. 17 team will travel to Dover, Del. next week
for the Autism Speaks 400 at . The racing action at the Monster Mile
will be broadcast live on FOX television and MRN radio affiliates
beginning at 2:30 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, June 1.

Matt Kenseth on racing at LMS:
“You know, I’ve always enjoyed the track at Charlotte. It will
always be a special place for me. It’s where I got my first Cup
win, we won the All-Star race there in ’04, and we’ve picked up
a couple of Nationwide wins too.
“Last Saturday, in the All-Star race, we showed lots of
promise. We finished third, but the promising thing for us was
that the car was pretty competitive, at least the most
competitive it’s been in a while. If we can carry that momentum
over to this weekend, hopefully we can work to turn things
around for the No. 17 team.”
Crew Chief Chip Bolin on
racing at LMS:
“The All-Star race was a good motivator for these guys. The race
itself was promising for a lot of reasons. The team was good,
but more promising was how well the car ran. It wasn’t nearly as
good in practice or qualifying, but we were able to make the
proper adjustments throughout the race and get the car where
Matt wanted it.
“The 600 is a tough race. It’s long and takes a great amount
of concentration from the driver and the crew. Team 17 has had
some pretty good success in this race and hopefully that will
continue this weekend. We are bringing back the car Matt raced
in Fontana, so I am confident the car will be decent and that we
have one of the best drivers and pit crews out there. If we all
do our jobs and take care of business on Sunday, we should be
around with a shot at the end.”

Photos from the All-Star
Race
T here aren’t too many races on the NASCAR Sprint
Cup Series schedule that are non-points races: the Budweiser
Shootout, the Gatorade Duels and the Sprint All-Star Challenge. Each
race holds some prestige; however the All-Star Challenge at Lowe’s
Motor Speedway is where the best of the best — race winners from the
previous year or former All-Star race winners compete for bragging
rights and a $1 million dollar check. Matt Kenseth, driver of the
No. 17 DEWALT NANO Technology Ford Fusion qualified for the esteemed
event by winning two races in the 2007 NASCAR season (California and
Homestead), as well as being the 2004 winner of the All-Star race.
The field was set for the four 25-lap segment event with a
special qualifying procedure that consisted of three laps around the
track and a four tire change pit stop. Though Kenseth and company
only managed a 14th-place effort, the team was optimistic heading
into Saturday night’s 100-lap race.
Kyle Busch led the 24-car field to the green flag and looked as
though he would run away with the win, however engine trouble took
him out of contention just past the halfway mark and the race looked
to be up for grabs. Kenseth, who started 14th, made his way up to
third place by lap 50 and was reporting that his DEWALT NANO Ford
was handling well.
During the lap 75 mandatory pit stop, the final of the race, crew
chief Chip Bolin called for two tires and a track bar adjustment.
Kasey Kahne exited the pits as the race leader and Kenseth restarted
the race in seventh place, as not all cars took tires.
Throughout the final segment of the race Kenseth battled his way
through traffic picking off the competition one-by-one. In the end,
he was racing his Roush Fenway Racing teammate, Greg Biffle for
position. Though each were strong competitors, Biffle’s Ford Fusion
would prevail.
When the checkers waved, it was Kahne, Biffle, Kenseth, Jimmie
Johnson and Tony Stewart in the top five spots.
The solid finish for Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT NANO
Technology team didn’t give them a points advantage; however the
third-place finish was a moral booster that Kenseth hopes will carry
over to next weekend’s Coca-Cola 600.
“I’m just happy to run that good,” said Kenseth. “With the
All-Star race, honestly, you guys might remember for a day or two,
but I don’t think anybody else really remembers anybody except for
the winner that got the million dollar check, so to finish third is
great, but it’s not like we finished third and got a lot of points
and all that. But for us it was almost like a test and it was a good
morale booster, I think, for the team and a big confidence booster.
We haven’t really been running very good this year and when we have
run good, we’ve had a lot of problems. We were kind of back, I
thought anyway, back in form a little bit. We were pretty
competitive at times. Sometimes we were a little behind the 99,
sometimes we were a little behind the 16 and a couple of other guys,
but, overall, I thought we had a pretty good car. If it runs solid
like that for 600 miles, I think we’ll have a car that can be a
contender and that’s something I haven’t felt like for a while.”
Kenseth and the No. 17 team will once again take to Lowe’s Motor
Speedway marathon of races, the Coca-Cola 600. The racing excitement
will be broadcast live on FOX television and PRN radio affiliates
beginning at 7:30 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, May 25.

Matt Kenseth on racing in the All-Star Challenge:
“The All-Star race is cool if you get to be a part of it because
not everybody gets to do it. To be a part of that group is
always cool and to do it at Charlotte is a lot of fun. It pays a
lot of money and it’s a short race with no points, so it’s
always really exciting, because there’s really nothing on the
line — you just race for fun and the money. I also really like
the All-Star race because it involves the crew so much. There’s
the pit crew competition during the week and then they do a pit
stop for qualifying, so they have a lot to do with the
qualifying position, and they have some green-flag pit stops in
the race. So, it really focuses on the team a lot and I really
like that.”
Crew Chief Chip Bolin on
racing in the All-Star Challenge:
“I think the All Star event means a lot to
everybody on the team. It means we’re among the best and I think
that makes everybody feel special. The race allows us a chance
to go out, no holds barred, and run against the best, without
worrying about points. It allows the entire team to go out and
shine. Last year we sat on the pole, and it was all off our pit
stop, which made the guys all feel awesome, and the same way
with the race. The way the race is structured, I think two of
the stops this year will be pitting on the fly. So, it gives the
guys on pit road a real opportunity to be a part of this race
and make a difference.”

came to Darlington Raceway this weekend looking for a little
redemption. Since suffering three finishes of 38th or worse in the
last three races, Kenseth and company, led by crew chief Chip Bolin
needed to turn things around. However, at a track known as being Too
Tough to Tame with a newly-paved surface, which yielded a new
track-record average speed of 140.350 mph, team 17 had their work
cut out for them. After struggling with handling and speed in all
four of the weekend’s practice sessions and turning in a 34th-place
qualifying attempt, it didn’t look as though this would be the
weekend Kenseth and crew would turn things around. Nonetheless, in
true 17 team-fashion, they did. The crew worked on the DEWALT Ford
throughout the race and Kenseth crept through the field as the race
progressed. In the end, Kenseth scored a sixth-place finish in
Saturday night’s Dodge Charger 500.
Roush Fenway Racing driver, Greg Biffle led the 43-car field to
the green flag on Saturday evening under warm conditions at
Darlington Raceway. Kenseth rolled off 34th for the 367-lap event.
Within the first 10 laps of the race, Kenseth had marched up to 26th
position, in spite of reporting that his Ford Fusion needed “more
front grip.”
A caution on lap 11 permitted Kenseth to pit for the first time
of the race. Four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment were
prescribed by Bolin in hopes of remedying the handling issues that
Kenseth reported. Green flag racing commenced on lap 15 and Kenseth
was scored in 29th place.
Over the next 77 laps, Kenseth would make his way through the
field gaining several positions and on lap 92; he reported that his
DEWALT NANO Ford was “better.” When a cycle of green flag pit stops
began around lap 113, Kenseth was running 17th.
Kenseth would see pit road on three different occasions over the
ensuing 91 laps. On each stop the No. 17 crew would make minor
adjustments to continue to improve the handling of Kenseth’s Ford.
After a stop on lap 204 for four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment,
Kenseth rejoined the race in 13th place. However, fewer than 10 laps
later, Kenseth radioed to the team that he had a flat tire. Though
there were concerns in the pits, Kenseth remained on the track, even
picking up three positions, before a caution fell on lap 235
allowing him to stop.
On lap 235, Kenseth in ninth place brought his DEWALT NANO Ford
down pit road where the No. 17 crew serviced Kenseth’s Ford with
four fresh tires, fuel and another wedge adjustment. After the
speedy stop, as Kenseth was exiting his pit stall, he was tapped in
the close quarters of the pits by another competitor. The contact
resulted in minor fender damage to the DEWALT NANO Ford. Though
there was some concern that the damage may cause a tire rub, Bolin
directed Kenseth to stay on the track, so not to lose valuable track
position. When green flag racing commenced on lap 240, Kenseth was
in seventh place.
By lap 242 the fender damage was causing the dreaded tire rub,
however Kenseth remained on the track and held on for yet another
much needed caution on lap 248. Breathing a sigh of relief, Kenseth
made his way down pit road so that the No. 17 crew could repair the
fender damage. Though he lost 10 track positions, Kenseth’s Ford was
repaired and he again plotted his course to the front.
By his final trip to pit road on lap 301, Kenseth had worked his
way up to 10th place and was reporting that he was pleased with the
handling of the DEWALT NANO Ford. The green flag fell for the final
time with just 60 laps remaining in the race and Bolin directed
Kenseth to save fuel, as they were about five laps short of their
fuel window. Though Kenseth was not able to race as hard as he would
have liked for the finish, he still managed to gain four spots and
capture the checkers in sixth place.
“We’ve been running so terrible and having such bad luck, so I
was happy for our finish. The only little thing frustrating is the
racing was kind of weird at the end. Everybody is riding around
half-throttle and when you have a hard tire and a little fuel cell
everybody is trying to stretch that last five laps, so that was kind
of weird. But, other than that, it was good. It was a great finish
for us and we ran pretty good. It was kind of a typical 17 team
finish. We started toward the rear and ended up with a good finish,
it just took us that long to get our car right and we had it really
good that last run. We actually had it pretty good before then, but
we got the fender knocked in on pit road and had to give up all that
track position, but everything pretty much went right for a change.”
Kyle Busch earned his third win and eighth top-10 finish of 2008.
He remains the series' standings leader for the second consecutive
week. Carl Edwards finished second, followed by Jeff Gordon in
third, Dale Earnhardt Jr., in fourth and David Ragan in fifth.
The solid finish for Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT NANO
Technology team advanced the team from 22nd to 20th in the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series driver point standings. Kenseth is currently 577
points behind point leader Kyle Busch.
Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT NANO Technology team will enjoy a
break from points racing this week and race fun and prestige in the
annual All-Star race. Kenseth and crew will take to Lowe’s Motor
Speedway this Saturday evening for all the racing excitement. FOX
television and PRN radio will carry the live broadcast beginning at
7:30 p.m. (EST).

Darlington Nationwide recap
May 10, 2008 No. 17
CitiFinancial FORD FUSION RECAP:
LOOSE WHEEL, HARD WRECK END
STRONG RUN FOR KENSETH
W ith a new
racing surface to figure out and speeds higher than the track had
ever seen, Matt Kenseth and the CitiFinancial team anticipated that
the Nationwide Series’ return to Darlington Raceway would be a
learning experience. The No. 17 team looked as if they would escape
without even a Darlington stripe until a loose wheel and a late-race
wreck ended Kenseth’s night early.
Kenseth started eighth but quickly moved up through the field. Up
to fourth on lap 29, Kenseth told crew chief Drew Blickensderfer
that the car had gotten “really, really tight in the last five
laps.” A long green flag run set in and green flag stops began on
lap 55. After deciding on an air pressure and track bar adjustment
for the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion, Blickensderfer called Kenseth
down pit road on lap 60. The field cycled through and Kenseth was
back in sixth on lap 66.
When the caution fell on lap 73, Kenseth said the “front tires
need more grip.” Kenseth came in and received a wedge adjustment and
enough fuel to make it to the end of the race. The CitiFinancial
Ford Fusion restarted sixth with 69 laps left. Kenseth was running
fifth when the next caution flew on lap 85. Blickensderfer elected
to keep Kenseth out on the track. When the rest of the leaders came
down pit road, Kenseth moved up and restarted as the leader on lap
95.
Kenseth began voicing concern about a vibration and a possible
loose wheel. Kenseth held onto the lead but said the vibration was
getting worse. Not wanting to take any chances, Kenseth gave up the
lead and came down pit road under green on lap 121. The
CitiFinancial team gave Kenseth four fresh tires and sent him back
on the track one lap down.
With the laps winding down, Kenseth was fighting for position,
vying to be the first car one lap down. Racing hard off of turn
four, Kenseth lost control and the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion spun
and hit the inside wall. The car suffered extensive damage and
Kenseth was unable to return to the race. The CitiFinancial Ford
Fusion finished 28th.
“We just had a loose wheel while we were leading and we had to
pit because it was getting ready to fall off,” said Kenseth. “When
we came back out, I was just driving way over my head to somehow try
to get back in the race. We were a lap down and I was trying to
catch up where I thought the lucky dog was and I just let it get
away from me. I was frustrated and mad at the moment and driving a
little faster than I knew the car would take me and it just got away
from me.”

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Darlington: Cup: “Darlington was always
a really cool racetrack. It was unique and challenging and, to
me, that made it a lot of fun to drive. Now that it’s been
repaved, I’m interested to see what the racing will be like. We
always worried about tire wear at Darlington in the past,
because the track was just so rough – it was really important to
have a good handling car because we slid around so much. With
these new cars, this has been an issue every week – the cars
really slide around a lot anyway, so it’s going to be
interesting because we really haven’t had much luck with the
handling on these cars yet. We’ve been struggling with getting
the car to turn through the center without getting it too loose
on exit. The handling problems we’ve had on top of our just
awful luck, has made the past few weeks not a lot of fun for me.
So maybe we’ll catch a break this week, and at least finish on
the lead lap.
“We’re bringing a brand new car this weekend and I honestly
don’t know what we’ll have. But, hopefully we’ll continue to
improve and make these cars better to where we can start
competing for wins again.”
NNS: “I’m looking forward to seeing what the track
feels like now. I liked the old Darlington a lot, we always ran
well there. I think it will be the same Darlington, just faster
and smoother. It should make for a great race. The CitiFinancial
Ford Fusion should be good. We’re taking the same car we won at
Atlanta with earlier this year. Last weekend didn’t go as
planned so I’m excited to turn things around and get a strong
finish for CitiFinancial.”
Sprint Cup Crew Chief Chip Bolin on racing at
Darlington: “Darlington should be fun.
It’s going to be challenging like it always is, but this time
there’s going to be a certain level of uncertainty going in.
But, it’s pretty much the same for everybody.
“The bottom line is we’ve got to get our stuff running
better, so that we don’t run in the back and get caught up in
accidents. Our guys have done as good a job as anybody out
there, and though our finishes don’t reflect that, we’ve still
been running lap times comparable to the leaders each week. We
have had just awful circumstances over the past few races, which
have made for long dreadful weekends. Our cars aren’t performing
good enough to consistently run in the top 10 and challenge for
wins right now, and that has to change going forward.”
NNS Crew Chief Drew Blickensderfer on racing at
Darlington: “This weekend should be
good for us. Matt’s record at Darlington speaks for itself and I
don’t think he’ll have any trouble adapting to the new surface.
We were wrecked here last year and didn’t get the finish we
deserved. Hopefully this weekend will go better for us and we’ll
get CitiFinancial their first win of the year.”
