Matt Kenseth on racing at
Daytona:
“We didn’t start out
the season at Daytona on a good note, finishing
42nd, but I don’t think that our finish tells the
whole story. We had one of the best speedway cars
we’ve had in a long time in February. We qualified
well, in the 14th position, and we were running in
the top-five when something in the engine broke. I
think we’ll be competitive this weekend at
Daytona.”
Crew
Chief
Robbie
Reiser
on
racing
at
Daytona:
“I think our restrictor plate program is
strong and the Roush-Yates engines will be fast this
weekend. We had a fast car in Daytona back in
February until something let go in the engine. We
are bringing the same car back this time, and I
think it will be competitive. We are coming off of
two good finishes heading into Daytona and we have
to continue to work our way up in the point
standings by focusing on top-ten finishes.”

With his
11th place finish at Sonoma, Kenseth picked up one
spot in the point standings and gained 53 points on
the point leader.
Matt Kenseth posts career-best finish
at Infineon Raceway
SONOMA, CA (June 26, 2005) — Matt Kenseth
posted his career-best finish at Infineon Raceway on
Sunday by finishing in the 11th position. This is the
second top-fifteen finish in as many weeks for Kenseth,
as he tries to put the forgettable early part of the
season behind him and focus on working his way into the
Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship.
In what
would be his 200th NASCAR Cup Series start, Kenseth
rolled off the grid in the 24th position to start the
first road course race of the season. Kenseth would
never run lower than his starting position throughout
the race, as he quickly began to move up through the
field. The No. 17 DEWALT Ford Taurus found its way into
the 16th position by the second caution flag of the
afternoon, which slowed the field on lap 19. Most of the
lead pack elected to stay out on the course rather than
come into the pits, including Kenseth, who radioed to
his crew that the racecar was “not bad” and that he
wanted to keep his track position, which is so important
at Sonoma.
Kenseth had gained a couple of positions by
the time the first cycle of green flag pit stops began
around lap 33, and came in himself on lap 34, receiving
four fresh tires and fuel, along with an air pressure
adjustment. Kenseth worked his way up into the 8th spot
by lap 45, and continued to run in the top ten until the
seventh caution of the day flew on lap 68. Kenseth
elected to come down pit road for the second and final
stop of the day during this caution period, receiving
four sticker tires and enough fuel to make it to the end
of the race.
The No. 17 restarted the event in
17th-place on lap 72. There were several cars running
near the front of the field that had pitted out of
sequence towards the beginning of the race, and did not
come in to pit during this caution period. The DEWALT
team felt that some of these teams could have fuel
issues as the remaining laps ticked off and hoped to
gain an advantage through fuel mileage and pit
sequencing. However, a late caution on lap 102 gave
those cars a break on fuel, and any advantage was lost.
Kenseth continued to pick up a few more spots as the
laps wound down and finished in the 11th position.
“It
was a little frustrating today because after a certain
point, we just couldn’t seem to move up any further,”
said Kenseth, after the race. “Our car was decent all
day long, but we just didn’t have enough to get to the
front. I have to be pleased, though, as this is my best
finish here at Sonoma. We’ve put some work into our road
course program and I think it is paying off. We will be
testing at Watkins Glen next month, and I hope that will
continue to improve our program.”
The No. 17 DEWALT Ford
Taurus will be competing in the Pepsi 400 at the Daytona
International Speedway next Saturday night for the only
restrictor-plate race run under the lights.

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Infineon
Raceway:
“Our road course program has
improved over the last couple of years. We have made
it a point to go to places like Road Atlanta and VIR
to get in some practice on road courses and I think
it has helped. Also, not coming from that kind of
racing background, getting a few races under our
belts has helped, as well. We feel confident coming
off of our fourth-place finish last week at
Michigan.”

“We’ve qualified really well in Sonoma the
last few years — our finishes haven’t been great but
they have improved the last couple of times we raced
out there. We went to VIR last week to shake the car
down, check the brakes, things like that, so
hopefully we’ll have a competitive car come
Sunday.”

Matt Kenseth scores first top-five
finish of 2005
BROOKLYN, MI (June 19, 2005) — Matt Kenseth, sporting
the special copper and black Carhartt paint scheme on
his No. 17 Ford Taurus, scored his first top-five finish
of the season at the Michigan International Speedway on
Sunday. The No. 17 was able to break out of the rut it
has been in for much of the season to post a
fourth-place finish and gain three positions in the
NASCAR Nextel Cup point standings.
Rolling off in the
21st starting position, Kenseth quickly drove his way
into the top ten, landing in the tenth spot by lap 21.
When the first caution flag of the afternoon flew on lap
41, Kenseth had worked his way up into the fourth
position. Kenseth elected to come down pit road for
fresh tires, and also received air pressure and wedge
adjustments, as the car was a little tight in the center
of the turns. Kenseth lost a couple of spots on pit road
as the No. 17 Carhartt/DEWALT crew let a tire get away
from them, and restarted the race in the sixth spot on
lap 47.
The second caution flag of the day slowed the
field just four laps later for debris on the racetrack,
but the No. 17 elected to stay out, having worked its’
way into the third position. When the race restarted on
lap 59, the Roush Racing entries of Mark Martin, Kurt
Busch and Matt Kenseth made up the top three.
Kenseth
continued to run in the top five during what would be a
long green flag run between the second and third caution
periods. Running fourth, Kenseth came down pit road on
lap 91 for his first green flag stop of the afternoon.
The Carhartt/DEWALT crew gave the No. 17 four fresh
tires and fuel, along with air pressure and wedge
adjustments, in just 13.2 seconds, and Kenseth found his
way into the third spot once the cycle of green flag pit
stops was completed.
Kenseth completed another green
flag pit stop on lap 134, maintaining his fourth-place
position as the stops cycled through. Kenseth would
remain in the top-five for the rest of the event,
running as high as second. The No. 17 was running second
with under ten laps to go when the tires started to go
away. Kenseth lost a couple of spots as the final laps
ticked off, but ended the race with a season-best
fourth-place finish.
“I’m glad we were able to finish
in the top-five today. It’s hard to believe it’s the
first one of the season. All year we’ve known we were
capable of running and finishing up front, but it seems
it’s been one thing or another for us this year,” said
Kenseth, after the race. “This was a great weekend to
run well with Carhartt and Roush both being here in
Michigan. We’ve believed all along that we had the
equipment and the team to be competitive but it just
hasn’t all come together for us like this. Our goal is
to finish consistently up front for the remainder of
these first 26 races and work our way into the
Chase.”
The No. 17 DEWALT Ford Taurus will be competing
in the first road course race of the 2005 season next
weekend in Sonoma, California.

Matt Kenseth post-race quotes
MATT KENSETH — No. 17 DeWalt/Carhartt Taurus
(Finished 4th)
“Everybody has been running good, really, except for
us. I’ve just been trying to get our stuff caught up to
the 16. I’ve been trying to pay attention to Greg and
Greg’s been helping me a lot. Doug and Robbie have been
working together to try to get our stuff close to
theirs.”
NOT A BAD DAY. “Yeah, that’s the best we’ve
run in a long, long time. We need to get some good runs
to build some confidence and try to figure out what
we’re doing a little bit better. That was definitely a
step in the right direction.”
DID YOU LEARN SOME THINGS? “I hope so. We
tested here and found some things that seemed to help us
and we ran pretty close to the same setup when we came
back as to what we tested and we were fairly close to
Greg’s setup. The main thing is we just have to keep
working on the cars. I don’t think it’s a shocker to see
Greg in victory lane. You’ve just got to work on the
cars. We’re so sensitive with aero that I think we just
have to keep tuning on it and keep trying to get it
better. I think we’ve figured out a few things, we just
have to keep working on it.”
IT MUST FEEL GOOD. “Yeah, we haven’t run up
front very much this year, so it definitely feels good
to get a good finish.”
YOUR FIRST TOP FIVE. “It’s been frustrating
the last six months or so, but the guys did a good job
on pit road. Robbie made the right call not getting
tires there at the end. It was a little bit of a gamble,
but it paid off and we ran pretty competitively. I was
pretty happy with our car today. It was nothing like
Greg was, but Greg has kind of been in a league of his
own most of the year.”
FOUR ROUSH GUYS IN THE TOP FIVE. “Yeah, I’m
just glad I wasn’t the one that didn’t. That does feel
good. Jack’s done a great job of giving us good stuff.
Doug Yates gives us just awesome engines. If we can get
these things through the corner, they’ll just fly down
the straightaway. So we definitely have the equipment.
We just have to stay with the stuff in the right
direction. We have to keep working on it and, hopefully,
we can get back to Victory Lane and running up front
pretty soon.”

Matt Kenseth on racing at
Michigan:
“Michigan is
a great track that has three or four grooves that
you can run. It’s really a driver’s track in that
you can really move around and pass. We’ve had some
good finishes there, along with a win in 2002, so
we’ll see if we can get a solid finish out of it
this weekend.”
Crew
Chief
Robbie
Reiser
on
racing
at
Michigan:
“We tested up in Michigan a couple of
weeks ago and learned some things about our cars. We
chose to bring car number 44 as our primary car to
Michigan because Matt thought it drove easier than
the 44, which we also tested. Handling will be key –
starting loose enough is important yet at the same
time you want to be tight enough not to loose speed.
Hopefully, we’ll get the set-up right and get a good
finish out of it.”

Matt Kenseth finishes 32nd at Pocono
LONG POND, PA
(June 12, 2005) — A familiar tune plays again for Matt
Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT Ford Taurus as late tire
problems effectively finish the day for Kenseth and the
DEWALT team. Kenseth qualified in and ran in the top-ten
to begin the day at the Pocono Raceway, but started to
fall back through the field with handling problems, only
to be taken out of contention by first gambling with a
green flag pit stop and then suffering a flat
tire.
Kenseth began the weekend with a strong qualifying
run, posting the 10th quickest lap by getting around the
2.5-mile tri-oval racetrack in 55.552 seconds. Kenseth
gained several spots early in the Pocono 500, making his
way from his starting position of tenth to sixth-place
in the first two laps. Kenseth would take up residence
in the sixth position, continuing to run there when the
first caution of the afternoon slowed the field on lap
28. Kenseth found it impossible to pass in the
early-going of the 200-lap/500-mile event and reported
to his crew that the No. 17 DEWALT Ford was getting a
little bit tight running behind the top-five for so
long.
Kenseth took advantage of the first caution
period and came down pit road for wedge and air pressure
adjustments and four fresh tires. The No. 17 restarted
the race in sixth-place and continued to be tight.
Kenseth advised his crew that the car needed to be
turning off the right front better, and came down pit
road again for service during the second caution period
brought out on lap 43. Kenseth, running eighth, received
additional wedge and air pressure adjustments and four
new tires, and returned to the field in the 14th
position.
By the next caution period on lap 67, Kenseth
had moved into the tenth position, but was still
concerned that the No. 17 was a little too tight.
Kenseth brought the DEWALT Ford down pit road and the
crew took a rubber out of the left rear, made another
air pressure adjustment and gave Kenseth four sticker
tires. The No. 17 rejoined the field in 14th-place.
These adjustments would send the No. 17 too far in the
other direction — “incredibly loose” to quote Kenseth.
“Incredibly loose” on lap 80 became “unbelievably
loose” by lap 90, according to Kenseth, who had by then
slipped back into the 19th position. The fourth caution
of the event flew on lap 90 and Kenseth brought his
loose racecar down pit road to receive four tires in
addition to wedge and air pressure adjustments. Kenseth
stalled the car getting out of his pit box, costing
valuable time, and restarted the race in 31st-place.
Kenseth had managed to work his way back up into the
23rd position when he and the No. 17 team made a risky
decision — seeing a competitor with a tire going down
and surmising that a caution was imminent, the No. 17
guys elected to go ahead and come down pit road under
green, hoping to gain an advantage over the field by
beating them down pit road. However, the caution did not
come out until some three laps later, which ended up
putting Kenseth in 31st place, one lap down.
Shortly
after the restart on lap 122, Kenseth made contact with
the No. 25, causing some damage to the left front fender
of the No. 17. While the damage appeared minor, it would
come back to haunt Kenseth later in the day. When the
next caution flag slowed the field on lap 146, Kenseth
spent a lengthy stop on pit road not only receiving
adjustments and new tires, but also having the crew work
on the damaged left front fender. Kenseth restarted the
race in the 30th position, one lap down, and hoped to
gain his lap back during the next caution
period.
However, on lap 178, running in 29th-place,
Kenseth radioed to the crew that he had a flat tire.
Kenseth had to make a green flag stop to change tires
and, unbelievably, after rejoining the field for only
about seven laps, blew another tire. This time the
DEWALT crew changed left side tires only but elected to
come down pit road again to work on the left front
fender, which the crew suspected was rubbing against the
tire. When the seventh caution of the afternoon flew on
lap 194, Kenseth came down pit road again for the crew
to make sure they had successfully repaired the fender
so as not to cause Kenseth any more problems.
Kenseth
rejoined the field in the 32nd position, four laps down,
for the green-white-checkers finish. The race would end
under caution, however, as another caution slowed the
field on lap 199. Roush Racing teammate Carl Edwards was
victorious, with Kenseth closing out the day in the 32nd
position.
“There have been times this year when I just
really didn’t know what to say. This is one of them,”
said Kenseth of his day in Pocono. “Last week we did
okay, getting a top-ten finish. Now here we are again,
blowing tires, going down laps and going home with a bad
finish. It has just been an up and down season for us so
far. All I can say is, I know the guys continue to work
hard back in the shop setting up these cars and on race
day, they come prepared. We’ll just keep working hard
until we get the finishes out of it that we know we’re
capable of.”
The No. 17 Carhartt/DEWALT Ford will be
running its second race of the season in the copper and
black paint scheme of Carhartt next Sunday at the
Michigan International Speedway.

I

Matt misses the Busch
race: From
Jayski: Why no Kenseth? #17-Matt Kenseth was the only
driver not to make the race, why? when he had more race attempts
them #31-Dave Blaney [7 to 3] and higher in Owenrs Points
[34th]? Kenseth was a Post Entry, which means the team entered
the car after the entry blank deadline [usually 13 days before
the race] so Kenseth was not eligible for a spot due to points,
attempts, past winner unless there were spots open, but there
was not.(6-3-2005)
Kenseth and Elliott split Race of
Champions at Oglethorpe Speedway Park
Nextel Cup Series champion Matt Kenseth put all rumors of his
not being able to pilot a dirt late model to rest in the second
go around taking Lonnie Brant’s Loves Seafood Chevy to victory
lane in front of 3,041 adoring fans. “That was a lot of fun,”
said Kenseth in victory lane. “I did not realize how fast these
cars can get on the track. They were really flying through the
corners.”

Matt Kenseth on racing at Dover:
“I’ve always said that Dover is one of my favorite tracks. It’s particularly special to me because I got my first Cup Series start there back in 1998, subbing for Bill Elliott. We tested the Busch cars in Dover last week and had a good day. I think we learned a lot that will help us both on Saturday and Sunday.”
Crew Chief Robbie Reiser on racing at Dover:
“I think we’ll be in good shape for Dover. We’re bringing a brand new car for the Busch race which we tested last week at the track. The test was good and the team really figured out some things that should be able to help us all weekend. We’re bringing the same car we ran here last fall for the Cup race. We ran good and led a bunch of laps before crashing coming onto pit road. I think it will be a good car for us. We’re just looking at this point to come out with a solid finish without blowing a tire or getting caught up in someone else’s crash, like has happened to us so many times this season.”
